Nike’s Instagram Posting Habits

Nike’s Instagram Posting Habits:

For my first assignment I had to do an audit on Nike’s social media engagement on social media, specifically Instagram. Nike is a sports clothing brand that targets people between the ages of 15-40 that tend to be athletes. The company tries to reach out to their customers using a moto that everyone can be an athlete. Using social Media is a free and good way to market and advertise to your customers new things and special promotions that you are having, and Nike does not utilize Instagram to do that. In this blog you will learn why Nike has failed on Instagram and how not to do what they do.

Mistake #1: Nike usually only posts on their Instagram page about once a week.

Fix #1: According to a credible source, “meltwater.com”, you should post up to at least one time a day, and doing that can increase your account following by about 56%. Nike did not do this, and though they have around 99.8 million followers, if they posted more I think they would have a bigger following.

Mistake #2: On the few posts that Nike puts on Instagram they include a photo or video, followed up by a short description without any hashtags.

Fix #2: According to another credible source, “sendible.com”, they explain that, “It’s best practice is to use between three to five hashtags per post, despite the fact that the maximum you can add is 30 per Instagram post”. The use of the hashtag can connect you to other Instagram posts that will boost the amount of views and clicks that your Instagram account will gain.

Mistake #3: Nike never responds to any of their followers when they comment and reach out to Nike to express their opinions on certain posts and expecting some sort of a response.

Fix #3: According to another credible source, “social media examiner” when your followers post comments on Instagram you should respond to the comments that people post on your page as a best practice. When you respond to your followers they feel more connected and are more likely to stay engaged with your social media following.

As of right now, Nike is a terrible example for other companies if they are deciding to engage in social media specifically when it comes to Instagram. Being that Nike is such a large company, they can get away with bad habits on social media, but if it was not as big of a company as it is, they would not be able to get away with their lack of social media engagement. I feel that if Nike can incorporate some of these changes they will be much better with their success on social media.
